A slow moving supercell develops near Mt Tarampa and brings a great flangfest to northern Brisbane!

After getting back from a relatively unsuccessful chase at 2:30am in the morning, then starting work at 6am, and finishing at midday - I was pretty tired!  However even though on paper this day showed less promise than previous - it felt the best out of the lot.  So despite me wanting to crawl back into bed just after midday, I decided to head out chasing - with Randy coming along with me.

It was a tricky setup with very northerly shear - but the Brisbane Valley looked like a good spot and some large showers were developing to its northwest (and even the more intense cells weren't showing much of an eastward push) so it seemed like a better bet than going to the Sunshine Coast (which was the other location that we had in mind).

As we headed out onto the Warrego Hwy, one cell began to look a little more interesting, as we got closer we could see some structure and the odd CG - so we found a vantage point and stopped and watched.  Initially there seemed to be a small WC under the updraft, but it tended to outflow eventually.

The storm began to move more south for a bit before another updraft developed (this time much bigger!)  There was even signs of broad scale rotation in the cell with the curvature of the base/stratocu bands.  The CG intensity certainly picked up too and it was overall getting much more exciting!

On one of our last stops, there was a beautiful field which gave some lovely contrast in the photos before we shot east to Fernvale.

Unfortunately courtesy of roadworks, we didn't get there as fast as we liked - and by the time we got in front the cell became very outflow dominated and was sliding southeast again.

We headed to Amberley and grabbed a snack (with the cell rapidly dying), but there looked to be some strong development occuring on the outflow of the storm just west of the northern suburbs of Brisbane.  So we raced into Brisbane (peak hour traffic and all!)  We even met up with Dave who was at uni, then after much deliberation we decided to head to a football field where Dave ref's sometimes.  It had a nice shelter where we sat under and setup our tripods and were treated to some torrential rain and fantastic flangs!!!  The only thing was, many were shrouded in rain, and with a narrow view of field - many of them were missed :(  However the best one I got had two power transformers blowing up (one on the left), while the other close one hit 20m away - so bright it lit up the rain drops!  However it was *just* out of from (to the right).

A few more photos are below - by the end of it I was absolutely wrecked!  I had to go back home and write one more report before finally getting to bed with no lunch or dinner!
