An evening lightning adventure into the Downs proved fruitful with some spectacular lightning!

Despite just recently coming back from Darwin, I was really keen for a good lightning show!  It looked like there might be some nice lightning in the Downs, with a line developing between Moree and Gundy and out towards Inglewood, slowly moving north.  The next day didn’t look bad for storms, so Jason drove up from the Gold Coast and we planned to chase that evening and then chase the following day also.  We headed out to Toowoomba and then headed northwest out towards Dalby to try and get in front of the line of storms.  There was certainly no shortage of CGs!!!  Absolutely heaps of them – we ended up stopping near Macalister for some CG shots.  We sat there for a while taking photos of CGs when the lightning frequency decreased a bit.

However there was another updraft on the NW edge that looked to be increasing in frequency, so we headed off towards Chinchilla to try and take some photos of the new cell.

The new cell wasn’t nearly as active as the original cell, but as it decayed it began to give off some truly spectacular CG and crawler combinations which gave me (what is to this day), my favourite lightning photo!

It was getting late and I think from memory we got back home at around 12:30-1am, so hit the sack and then checked the photos in the morning!
