While most of the storms weren't really the true monsoonal storms that develop further north in the tropics, I couldn't think of any other way to describe them given they were largely induced by a monsoon low that tracked south through western Queensland producing widespread rain and flooding across much of Queensland and northern NSW! Because no one day had lots of good photos, but quite a few of the days had 1-2 good photos I decided to group them into a collage over a week. The first storms started on January 8, I was working unfortunately so couldn't chase, and with a dryline pushing close to the coast it was going to be risky with things potentially drying out. After work I decided to chance it and headed to Brisbane and then was going to head north and see if I could pick up some of the storms in the evening. Unfortunately, I got caught in a stormjam on the way north and it was a no-go. I was forced to enjoy spectacular CGs while stuck in traffic! The consolation prize? A spectacular sunset from just near Redcliffe as the storms moved out to sea, but their anvils still extended back over land. The next photos I took were on Saturday, the 10th of January. A nice cell developed west of Laidley so I headed out just before church to have a gander. I was impressed with the structure, a big solid updraft with nice curved low level inflow into the storm! However getting closer the storm weakened and became mostly outflow dominated... But it still proceeded to have some very heavy and solid rainshafts! But since the storm was weakening I decided to head off...it was moving very slowly also due to the low shear which wasn't doing it any favours. A few days later again on Wednesday the 14th of January, some more nice cells developed around the area. These were going to go just to the east of here, but due to the low level moisture they gave some nice lowered base features ahead of the storm which were quite nice to see! I drifted south a bit, but the cell was weakening and losing its nice features after a while:
But still managed to keep some impressive updrafts! That afternoon and evening rain developed and continued overnight, to which gave us some fun local flooding in the paddocks. We got 160mm in 48 hours which was most welcome!!! I ended up going for a walk after the rain, taking my ever faithful dog with me who had just as much fun as I did playing around in the flooded fields!
Although these ants below perhaps were not so fortunate, all trying to seek shelter on the highest point while surrounded by flowing water! The weekend picked up nicely with a nice storm on Sunday and an awesome sunset on Saturday
