Pulse Storms
Once again storms occurred during exam week…the day before one of my exams to be exact! I added an extra two study sessions to try and get some time off during the afternoon for storms. I decided that I could afford two hours – in lieu of study breaks (perhaps not the best way to do it, but if I didn’t go chasing I would have sat at the computer and moaned over radar instead of studying anyway! A line of storms were moving in from the NW, they were to go just south of me – so I decided to head south to get closer and intercept!
Unfortunately, the only way to head south quickly lead me straight through the middle of the storms! I had torrential rain with very low (10-15 metres) visibility combined with some strong (25 knot) winds, quite a few flangs too! I kept getting soaked, with all of the flangs I wound down my window partially and the water was pouring in! But it was worth it – hearing my first real close thunder for ages!
I headed south and then southeast to run parallel with the storm, I got a few CGs, but perhaps the most impressive were the myriad of moist lowerings that were sitting on the periphery of the outflow area – not quite a gust front, but just lots of lowerings – some reaching the ground! I pottered around the storm before slowly making my way back home (watching twisting updrafts develop just above my house!) I had about 20-30minutes of rolling thunder at my place, before a quick study session.
A line of cells were developing to the west of Brisbane – it appeared that a squall line was going to form, so I shot off towards a lookout at Sunny bank and watched it come towards me. I was hoping that with the moisture around that it’d produce a nice gustfront – it was OK, but not fantastic – but still nice to watch! I decided to track the gustfront back towards the north towards home. I stopped at a park near my house and videoed the gustfront go over, I got some torrential rain once again and some strong-gale (33kn) winds! Was lots of fun to watch. I got home to see a nice little creek running through my backyard with some more thunder!
