Day 9, Brisbane-Glen Innes

Cloud was to become a problem on this day with a large cloud band spreading across the region.  I had another appointment in hospital in the morning, but was free after that.  James and I decided to head into the Downs to see if anything developed on the elevated terrain, but it was quite marginal!  It was partly cloudy over the Southeast Coast, but when we went into the Downs it became completely overcast!

We stopped at the Cunningham and New England Hwy interchange (well, just off it) and waited for a bit.  We ended up driving further north just to drive through a heavy shower for ‘fun’ but it ended up being a good option for us in the long run!  An area of heavy showers and rain to our southwest actually developed an organized outflow region and produced a nice little gustfront as it advanced towards the NE!

We got a little closer to it to get some video and photos – it fell apart soon after (to be expected as it was unlikely to be able to remain organised for a very long time).

After this we decided to make our way slowly south, we wanted to be somewhere in NSW for the next day, and we thought sitting on the Tablelands would give us a good road option depending on where we wanted to be the next day.  On the way we stopped at Storm King Dam near Stanthorpe – a place James and I had always wanted to visit (more so because of the name!)  And then we headed south.  The sky began to the clear to the south, and some lovely multicell storms developed to the SE of Glen Innes that we could see the tops of!

The Victorian chasers got some great photos of these as they were brilliantly backlit and white.  We got a nice sunset north of Glen Innes, before meeting up with the Victorians and Glen Innes for the night.  That night was quite an entertaining night – I was talking to a few people I often chase with on the laptop connected to the net, and relaying everything back to everyone in the room.  We ended up discussing the event for tomorrow for over two hours!!  It was a very dynamic system, but there were a lot of concerns of moisture and potential cloud, and also the system shot northwards the next day into southern Queensland, and James and I in particular were trying to determine where we wanted to be.  We didn’t particularly want to do 2500km in 36hrs…but we would if we needed to!
